Comments

3* Shreve (1957:247) applied the name E. alfredi conspicuus to the frogs from western El Pet‚n and the LacandĒn of Chiapas, believing them to be subspecifically distinct from the nominate form to the west. Duellman (1960:54), however, found little justification for recognizing subspecies of E. alfredi.

Life History

Life History Narrative

Seemingly uncommon in the Yucatan Peninsula, this frog inhabits moist lowland forests, where individuals have been found beneath surface debris and under the leaf sheaths of red banana plants (R. W. McDiarmid, pers. comm.). Fugler and Webb (1957:105) reported finding E. alfredi among large boulders at the edge of a forest clearing in Oaxaca. Virtually nothing is known of the natural history of E. alfredi. These frogs certainly prey on invertebrates, especially insects. Presumably they lay terrestrial eggs and the larvae undergo direct development.
