Professional Experience:

1/00 to Present -- Assistant Director, Conservation Management Institute (CMI), College of Natural Resources, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The CMI is a college- level center devoted to the development of techniques and information that support conservation research and teaching. The CMI consists of nine divisions. They are the Fish and Wildlife Information Exchange (information technology), Ecological Restoration, Invertebrate Projects, Military Lands Projects, GIS and Remote Sensing, Conservation Genetics, International Projects, Human Dimensions, and Outreach and Education. The Assistant Director serves as supervisor and leader of 50+ faculty, staff, and students as well as taking primary responsibility for institutional development. 11/91 to 12/99 -- Project Leader, Fish and Wildlife Information Exchange (FWIE), Department of

Fish and Wildlife Sciences, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.  The Fish and Wildlife Information Exchange (formerly the Multi-State Fish and Wildlife Information Systems Project) was a clearinghouse and technical assistance center for state, federal, and nongovernmental  agencies and organizations in information management and computerization. Duties included all aspects of program development (approximately $1.5 million/year), personnel management (50 positions), interaction with sponsors and cooperating agencies (several dozen), and planning.  The FWIE was generally involved in eight to 15 major projects at any given moment requiring extensive leadership and coordination.  Projects included geographic information systems and remote sensing, information management planning, training, species information system development, national surveys, gap analysis, military base research support, field research project management and many others.

6/87 -- present   Information Management Consultant. 

Work primarily involves consulting and training for natural resource agencies, institutions, companies, and individuals in information management and computer applications.  Recent clients include The World Bank Group, Dept. of Comprehensive Planning, Fairfax County, VA and Primlands Hunting Reserve.

4/87 -- 11/91   Assistant Project Leader of the Multi-State Fish and Wildlife Information Systems

Project at Virginia Tech, a cooperative Federal, State, and University project in Blacksburg, Virginia specializing in technical assistance, training, coordination, and research involving species information systems.
