These models both performed well, but require a classified image, which is time consuming and costly.
The image used in this study was acquired between 1991 and 1993, and now that the study is completed, it is 1999!
The advantage of the method is links population abundance to the landscape measures. It also provides a context for a large area, providing a solid picture of the status not only where an observer was, but across much of that state.
